What to Do if You Cut Your Dog's Nail Too Short (and it Bleeds

Has this ever happened to you when you trim your dog's nails? You make the cut a little too deep and your dog yelps or flinches. Then the blood starts flowing. It can be pretty upsetting for your dog, and for you. It can also be frustrating when your dog runs away, leaving a trail of blood spots throughout the house (especially if you have carpeting).

It is not hard to cut the nail too short, which is also called "quicking". This is especially common in dogs with dark nails, but it can happen with any dog.

Believe it or not, torn and bleeding nails are common reasons dogs are brought into the veterinary emergency room.

Here are the tricks to help stop the bleeding and minimize the mess.

1. Keep your dog in one spot - preferably on a surface that is easy to clean, such as tile or linoleum. Otherwise, place a towel or newspaper under his injured paw quickly to minimize the mess.

2. Keep your dog as calm as possible. The more excited he is - the higher his blood pressure becomes and the more he will bleed.

3. Cover the paw with a clean towel or paper towel.

4. Isolate and dry off the nail then dip the nail in septic powder or flour. Gently and lightly pack the flour or powder into the bleeding nail surface.

5. If the bleeding doesn't stop, you can apply a temporary light bandage. You can use bandage material or even cover the paw with a sock. However, the best bet is using the flour or septic powder. Many times you have to reapply several times, but it will stop the bleeding.

A product called Kwik Stop is designed especially to stop bleeding when nails are cut too short. You can find it at most pet stores. The tiny container will last a very long time. It stops bleeding almost immediately.

Why do dogs have hair?

Dog fur and hair provide a variety of benefits to our canine companions - they provide protection against foreign substances and extreme weather conditions. Your dog's coat is especially important during the cold winter months.

There are a variety of dog fur and hair types that go beyond curly, straight, long and short. And depending on the type of hair your dog has, he may need to be groomed a bit differently.
Which type of fur does your dog have?

Long (Bobtails, Collies, etc.): Long, smooth and silky with an under cape of thick hair. Occasionally, this hair may have light curls. Dogs with this type of coat typically require daily grooming and frequent bathing.

Short (Corgis, German Shepherds, etc.): Typically looks like 2 different capes of fur - long fur on top and much shorter fur underneath. Weekly grooming typically works and bathing isn't needed as often.

Curly (Irish Water Spaniels, Kerry Blues, Curly Coated Retrievers, etc.): This is curly, waterproof fur. It can usually be cut, washed and trimmed once a month or every two months. Scissors and other grooming tools are often necessary.

Silky (Cockers, Yorkies, Afghans, etc.): This type of hair requires more consistent grooming to prevent it from knotting. Daily grooming and monthly bathing are typically necessary. Scissors, combs and other grooming tools are often needed to keep the dog's coat silky & healthy.

Hard (Italian Hounds, Teckels, Airedale Terriers, Schnauzers, etc.): Dead fur should be removed every 3-4 months and firmly pulled in the direction of its growth. The coat should be brushed once or twice a month to get rid of dust, though bathing is only needed a few times a year.

Flat (Boxers, Dobermans, etc.): This hair is the easiest to take care of - a simple weekly grooming session will do!

We all deal with shedding right? It's almost the inevitable when it comes to being a pet owner. At some point or another we all end up with our pet's loose hair on the floor and on the furniture. Oftentimes, it's a big indicator to other people that we're pet owners because our clothes are covered with it when we leave the house.

Because shedding is such a common problem, you find so many pet owners talking about it, asking each other questions and looking for answers. There's a wealth of information out there - some myth and some fact. Many may even come up with advice and potential homemade solutions on their own. Well here are some facts to set the record straight about shedding :

MYTH: All dogs shed.

FACT: Some dog breeds shed while others don't shed at all. Newfoundlands and Saint Bernards for example tend to shed in very large amounts whereas breeds like Yorkies, Poodles & Bichon Frises barely shed, if at all.

MYTH: Dogs shed all the time.

FACT: While some dog breeds shed all year round, dogs typically shed most during the Spring & Fall. In the Spring, our dogs lose their winter coat to adjust for the warmer seasons ahead. In the Fall, our dogs lose their thinner coat to make way for a thicker coat that keeps them warm in the Winter.

MYTH: Excessive shedding is perfectly normal.

FACT: While some dog breeds shed in large amounts, excessive shedding could be a sign of illness, like ringworm or mange. In these cases, it's best to speak with your veterinarian.

Do Dog Sweat?

When people sweat, it is very obvious. Some of us perspire more than others, but everyone does it. Some people just sweat under the arms, and others seem to sweat almost everywhere.

Why do we sweat? Sweating is our body's mechanism for cooling us down when we get too hot. Here's how it works. Human sweat glands help to regulate body temperature by bringing warm moisture to the surface of the skin. This causes our bodies to cool as the water evaporates.

But what do dogs do when their bodies are too hot?

Dogs don't have skin like we do and they can't perspire. (Have you ever seen a dog with soaking wet underarms?) A dog's body can be easily overwhelmed by heat, often causing them to suffer from heat-related illnesses, such as heat stroke.

We have sweat glands all over our bodies, so we can cool ourselves down much quicker. Dogs don't have the luxury of overall cooling because their bodies have very few sweat glands, and most of these are in the footpads.

The main way dogs cool themselves is by panting and breathing, so the moist lining of their lungs serves as the evaporative surface (much like our skin). Many people believe that a dog's tongue contains sweat glands, but this is not true.

Dogs also dissipate heat by dilating (expanding) blood vessels in their face and ears. This helps to cool the dog's blood by causing it to flow closer to the surface of the skin.  

Excessive play on a hot day can lead to overheating (hyperthermia) and eventually to heat stroke. A dog that is overheated will seem sluggish or perhaps confused. His gums and tongue may appear bright red, and he will be panting hard. The dog may vomit, collapse, have a seizure or go into a coma.  

When a dog becomes overheated, it is a real emergency situation. If this happens to your dog, get him to a veterinarian immediately.

To protect your dog and to keep him cool, always make sure that he has shade and plenty of fresh clean water.

Exercise Your Dog

Exercise is one of the best ways to spend time with your dog. Not only is it fun, it helps keep you and your pet healthy. Exercise can help both of you to sleep better, it can also give you more energy and help build good, strong bones and muscles.

What you do to exercise with your dog depends on what kind of dog you have. Large dogs need more exercise than small dogs - at least two walks a day. Puppies love to wrestle and chase; they never seem to run out of energy. Some dogs like to play Frisbee in the park. But if your dog is older, he may just want to take walks in the neighborhood.

Whatever you do, exercising with your dog should be fun.

It should also be SAFE.

So today I would like to give you a quick list of 6 things you should NOT do when exercising your dog. By avoiding these 6 things you will eliminate the risk of injury to you and your dog.

Don't ride a bike with your dog on a leash.

Don't skateboard with your dog on a leash.

Don't rollerblade with your dog on a leash.

Don't exercise when it is very hot or very cold outside.

Don't let your dog run loose near traffic.

Don't exercise your dog right before or after he eats.

How much water does your dog really need?

Next to oxygen, water is the most important nutrient in your dog's body. Dogs can go for days without food. A dog's body can lose all of its fat and up to half of its protein and still survive. But when a dog loses just 10 percent of his body's water, bodily functions shut down causing serious illness. A 15 percent loss of water will kill him.So how much water does your dog need? It depends on his stress level, how active he is, his size, his age, his health and the kind of food he eats. Even the weather can be a factor. There is no steadfast rule.

In general, animals should take in two and a half times more water than food. Another useful guideline for dogs weighing 20 pounds or less is that they need about 1 cup (8 ounces) of water for every 5 pounds of body weight. So, a healthy 15-pound dog would need 3 cups of water a day.

Dogs don't have to DRINK their daily fill of water. They also get water from the food they eat. Wet food has a lot more water than kibbles or dry food. Snacks like apples are also a great source of water.When fresh, clean water is available a dog will generally drink all he needs to survive. The fresher the water, the more appealing it will be to your dog. As a general rule, change the water in your dog's bowl at least 3 times a day.Make sure your dog's bowl is clean. If you wouldn't drink from it, chances he won't want to drink from it either. You need to wash your dog's water bowl every day and disinfect it regularly to control bacteria.
